Travis Barker Files Lawsuit Over Deadly Plane Crash

By Chloe Bunker on November 22, 2008

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Travis Barker has filed a lawsuit over the September plane crash in which he was fortunate to walk away alive.

The 33-year-old musician filed suit Friday against both the owners of the plane, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., and the jet's maintenance company, according to The Associated Press.

Barker alleges that the two companies failed to properly operate and maintain the plane.

On Sept. 19, Barker and celebrity disc jockey Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein were the lone survivors when a Learjet crashed during takeoff just before midnight at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina. Both suffered severe burns in the accident.

The crash killed both pilots, as well as Barker's assistant, Chris Baker, and his bodyguard, Charles Monroe Still Jr.

Still's mother, Thelma Martin Still, also filed a lawsuit against the companies.

Barker is seeking more than $25,000 in damages, AP says.

Shortly after the crash, the former Blink-182 drummer admitted to Us Weekly that he was lucky to be alive.

"My biggest fear ever is to be involved in a plane crash, so when that happened ... well, I'm just thankful to be alive! I'm just grateful to be here at all," he said.

By Alexis Sezar on October 8, 2008

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Travis Barker says he realizes just how fortunate he is to have survived the Sept. 19 plane crash that killed four people.

"My biggest fear ever is to be involved in a plane crash, so when that happened ... well, I'm just thankful to be alive! I'm just grateful to be here at all," the former Blink-182 drummer reveals in the latest issue of Us Weekly.

The 32-year-old Barker and celebrity disc jockey Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein were the lone survivors when a Learjet crashed during takeoff just before midnight at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina. Both suffered severe burns in the accident, but are expected to fully recover.

After being released from a Georgia hospital on Sept. 29, Barker traveled by bus back to California, where he is now undergoing treatment at the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles. The musician, who traveled home with his father and ex-wife, Shanna Moakler, with whom he has two children, Landon, 5, and Alabama, 2, says he's hopeful of being out of the hospital within the next two weeks.

"I am doing the best I can possibly be. I'm so anxious to get out of here," he tells the magazine. I've just been in surgery after surgery. I have third degree burns basically from my feet up to my waist and both hands. One of my hands was second degree burns and one was third degree burns. I'm trying to have a quick recovery and play the drums again and be able to hold my kids again. I'm going nuts not being able to see them and spend time with them!"
