HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The Catholic-film drama "Doubt" scored five nods to lead the field of nominees announced Thursday for the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
"Doubt," the story of a Catholic priest and nun who battle over charges of sexual abuse, will compete in the category of best ensemble cast against "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon," "Milk" and "Slumdog Millionaire."
The film also generated several nods for its cast, including Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis.
Streep picked up a lead-actress nomination, where she will compete against Kate Winslet ("Revolutionary Road"), Anne Hathaway ("Rachel Getting Married"), Angelina Jolie ("Changeling") and Melissa Leo ("Frozen River").
The field nominated for lead actor is comprised of Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor"), Frank Langella ("Frost/Nixon"), Sean Penn ("Milk"), Brad Pitt ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") and Mickey Rourke ("The Wrestler").
The late Heath Ledger, who died in January from an accidental prescription drug overdose, moved another step closer to a potential Oscar nod. Ledger earned a supporting-actor nomination for his critically-acclaimed turn as the Joker in "The Dark Knight."
In the area of television, the nominees for best cast in a drama are "Boston Legal," "Dexter," "House," "Mad Men" and "The Closer." The field for best comedy cast will be a showdown between "30 Rock," "Desperate Housewives," "Entourage," "The Office" and "Weeds."
The SAG Awards will be held on Jan. 25.
