LOS ANGELES — The unlikely pairing of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss turned out to be a goldmine, with the pair racking up five wins to lead the field at Sunday night's 51st Annual Grammy Awards.
The former Led Zeppelin frontman and the bluegrass singer's CD, "Raising Sand," captured Album of the Year honors, while their song, "Please Read the Letter," won for Record of the Year.
"Thank you so much. We are thrilled," said Krauss as the duo accepted their Album of the Year trophy.
"I'm bewildered," said Plant. "In the old days, we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday."
Lil Wayne, who led the field with eight nominations, won four awards, including best rap album for "Tha Carter III."
Coldplay also had a big night with three wins, including Song of the Year honors for "Viva La Vida."
Other multiple winners, all with two victories each, were Radiohead, Peter Gabriel, Al Green, Kanye West, Metallica, Kirk Franklin, Sugarland, David Frost and Adele, who took home Best New Artist honors.
The ceremony, which was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, featured a record 22 performances. Irish rockers U2 kicked off the show, with additional performers including Lil Wayne, Paul McCartney, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and a very pregnant M.I.A.
However, two scheduled performers were notably missing — Chris Brown and Rihanna. Brown was arrested and charged with felony battery earlier in the evening for an alleged assault that took place early Sunday morning, reportedly against his girlfriend, Rihanna.
