LOS ANGELES — R&B star Chris Brown has been arrested and charged with felony battery in an alleged assault reportedly against his girlfriend, fellow singer Rihanna, according to Access Hollywood.
Brown, 19, became the subject of a police investigation after an alleged attack early Sunday morning against a woman that police have yet to identify, but the Los Angeles Times reports to be the 20-year-old Rihanna.
Police say Brown got into an argument with the woman as they sat in a parked car in the city's Hancock Park neighborhood shortly after midnight.
"After stopping his car, Brown and the woman got out and the argument escalated," the LAPD said in a statement. "The woman suffered visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker."
The LAPD received a 911 call reporting the disturbance. When officers arrived they found the victim, but Brown had already left the scene.
Brown later turned himself into authorities in the evening, where he was booked on a felony charge for making criminal threats, Access reports.
Brown later posted a $50,000 bail and was released. He is due back in court on March 5.
"At the time the case is presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office, additional charges may be filed," the LAPD told Access. "It will be up the LA County DA to review the case and determine which charge or charges will be most appropriate."
Both Brown and Rihanna were scheduled to perform at Sunday's Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, but each of the singers cancelled their appearances.
