Edith Fellows, Child Actress of 1930s, Dies at 88

LOS ANGELES – Edith Fellows, a child actress who was the subject of a famous 1936 custody case, has died. She was 88.

Her daughter, Kathy Fields Lander, tells the Los Angeles Times that Fellows died of natural causes Sunday at the Motion Picture & Television Fund retirement home in Los Angeles.

Fellows' mother abandoned her as an infant, and she was raised by her grandmother, who brought her to Hollywood. She made about 50 movies in the 1930s, '40s and '50s, including the 1936 film "Pennies from Heaven." She later turned to the stage and TV.

British Director Charles Jarrott Dies in L.A. at 83

LOS ANGELES – British director Charles Jarrott, whose career of nearly 50 years in film and television included the acclaimed British royalty dramas "Anne of the Thousand Days" and "Mary, Queen of Scots," has died, a spokeswoman said Saturday. He was 83.

Jarrott, who had been suffering from prostate cancer, died Friday night at the Woodland Hills retirement community operated by the Motion Picture & Television Fund, the organization's spokeswoman Jaime Larkin said.

Romance Publisher Walter Zacharius Dies at 87

NEW YORK – A longtime publisher who helped bring mass market and romance fiction into the mainstream and released the erotic classic "Candy" has died. Walter Zacharius was 87.

Zacharius was founder and CEO of Kensington Books. He retired from there in 2005.

Kensington spokeswoman Karen Auerbach says Zacharius died of cancer Wednesday at his Manhattan apartment. His many successes included "Candy" by Terry Southern and Mason Hoffenberg and the romance novels of Janelle Taylor.

Zacharius became an author late in life with the novel "The Memories We Keep."

Gary Winick, 'Bride Wars' and '13 Going on 30' Director, Dies at 49

Winick died Sunday of cancer in New York, Missy Davis, spokeswoman for Creative Artists Agency, which represented Winick, said Monday.

Blues Legend Eddie Kirkland Dies in Florida Car Accident

CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. – An 88-year-old blues legend known as the "Gypsy of the Blues" was killed in Florida when his car turned into the path of a Greyhound bus.

Eddie Kirkland was traveling southeast on U.S. Highway 98 in Crystal River, north of Tampa, about 8:30 a.m. Sunday when he tried to make a U-turn in front of the bus, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The bus, which was traveling northwest, pushed Kirkland's Ford Taurus about 200 yards before the vehicles stopped.

Kirkland was flown to Tampa General Hospital, where he later died.

Lesser passed away Wednesday from cancer-related pneumonia at a care facility in Burbank, Calif., his family told the Associated Press.
