David Schrott Ready to Rule the Photography World - page 3

By Rich King on December 31, 2005

"My brother was mowing the lawn and I said, 'For some reason, this is going to make a great picture,'" he explains. "The clouds were rolling in and I just shot it. It was very spontaneous and just sort of happened."

One of Schrott's favorite photographs is a black and white picture taken more than three years ago when he first returned to Drexel. It is a shot of a young girl standing in a bathtub placed in an open field.

"I feel like even now it still stands out among a lot of other pictures," he says. "Everything about it I think is beautiful - the tub, the field, her pose - the sort of lines created in the background. I love that picture."

Another one of his favorites is a color photograph inspired by a girl that he says "led him on for a few weeks." The shot is of a man holding a hat over his head while facing in the opposite direction of a woman.

"We met and we got along really well for a few weeks and all of a sudden she said, 'I don't like you,' and I was devastated," he recalls. "I just said, 'I'm going to make a picture about this and it's going to be really good!' It was one of those stand-out pieces that just sort of happened because I think it tied in emotionally to what I was going through."

Schrott says that he used to shoot black and white exclusively, but he has since moved on to color, which initially presented quite a challenge. David Schrott photography; copyright David Schrott

"It was a difficult switch at first, but once I got the hang of it, it proved worthwhile," he says. With black and white, you don't have to worry about color. When you're making that switch, you have to see things differently.

"With black and white, most everything is compositionally based. It's very formal - graphic, line, shape. With color, you have to add that element. Color brings meaning and more attention to certain aspects of the photo."

As for the future, Schrott says that he would like to concentrate on music, fashion and sports, while working with major music labels and magazines. He says that he is looking forward to the New Year and making his dream a reality.

"I think things are beginning to take off," he says. "I think in general, I just want to make good pictures. As long as I'm making good pictures and people are responding to them, I think that is the ultimate goal."
