Eva Mendes was born in Miami, Fla. to Cuban-American parents, but spent the majority of her childhood in Los Angeles.
Mendes’ first break came about in 1997 while she was studying as a marketing major at California State University Northridge. It was then that a talent manager happened across a photo of Mendes that was inside her friend’s portfolio. The random discovery led to Mendes dropping out of school to start going on auditions.
The following year, Mendes landed her first roles. Her first movie role was in "Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror," followed by an appearance in "A Night at the Roxbury." That same year, she also landed her first television work, with small parts on "ER" and "Mortal Kombat: Conquest."
Mendes would then skyrocket to fame in 2001, thanks to her sex-charged role in "Training Day," in which she starred alongside Denzel Washington (who won a best actor Oscar for his performance) and Ethan Hawke.
Following her breakthrough role, Mendes has gone on to star in such films as the car chase sequel "2 Fast 2 Furious" (2003, starring Paul Walker), "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" (2003, with Antonio Banderas and Johnny Depp), "Out of Time" (2003, also with Washington), the slapstick comedy "Stuck on You" (2003, with Matt Damon), and the romantic comedy "Hitch" (2005, with Will Smith).
