HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — DJ AM is hoping to provide a positive beat for people battling substance abuse.
The 36-year-old celebrity DJ is teaming up with MTV for a new series described as an intervention-style reality show.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will chronicle tough-love interventions for young people whose lives have become unmanageable because of chemical dependence. DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, will be present throughout the intervention process, which will be led by an addiction specialist.
The show is tentatively titled "Gone Too Far." A debut date has yet to be announced.
DJ AM has chronicled his own struggles with substance abuse, which began at the early age of 10. In a Glamour interview last year, he spoke about being abused by his father and the day he attempted suicide, only to have the gun not go off. While sober for a decade, he told the mag it's a daily battle to remain clean.
"At any given moment, I'm five seconds away from walking up to someone, grabbing their drink out of their hand and downing it," he said. "And if I do that, within a week, tops, I'll be smoking crack. So even though I have this crazy fabulous life, I have to hold on to the ground, gripping the grass with both hands."
DJ AM and Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker were the lone survivors last September in a plane crash that killed four.
