NEW YORK — Green Day star Billie Joe Armstrong is joining the cast of American Idiot, the Broadway musical he helped create.
The rocker will assume the role of St. Jimmy for eight performances, beginning on Tuesday, the show's producers said. He is replacing Tony Vincent, who will return to the role on Oct. 12 after dealing with a personal family matter.
After making his Broadway debut, Armstrong will rejoin Green Day for the band's South American tour, which kicks off Oct. 8 in Venezuela.
American Idiot tells the story of a new generation of young Americans as they struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world, borne along by Green Day's electrifying score. With an 8-member onstage band and a cast of 19 led by Tony Award-winner John Gallagher, Jr., the high-octane musical includes every song from Green Day's 2004 Grammy Award-winning album American Idiot, as well as several songs from the band's new release, 21st Century Breakdown.
