NEW YORK — Red, the searing portrait of artist Mark Rothko's ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for New York's famed Four Seasons Restaurant, was a big winner Sunday at the 2010 Tony Awards, receiving the best play prize and five other honors.
The production also picked up prizes for Michael Grandage, who won best director of a play, and Eddie Redmayne, who won for best featured actor in his role opposite Alfred Molina.
Fences also had a big night as it won for best revival of a play and saw its two stars, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, take home honors for best actors in a play.
Memphis, an original production loosely based on Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, took home the best musical prize.
Catherine Zeta-Jones won best actress in a musical for her Broadway debut in A Little Night Music. She was joined by fellow Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson, who won best featured performance for her own Broadway debut in Arthur Miller's A View From a Bridge.
"Every since I was a little girl I wanted to be on Broadway and here I am," said Johansson.
Sean Hayes hosted the star-studded 64th annual ceremony held at New York City's Radio City Music Hall.
