HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Kate Gosselin made her ballroom debut when ABC's Dancing With the Stars kicked off its 10th season Monday night, but the mother of eight wasn't immune to some harsh criticism.
"The technique was terrible," judge Bruno Tolini scolded after Gosselin and her pro partner, Tony Dovolani, attempted a Viennese waltz. "It looked like Tony was pushing a shopping cart across the floor. You have to exude something!"
Fellow judge Carrie Ann Inaba was a little less critical after the pair performed to Billy Joel's "She's Always a Woman to Me."
"You're very different than a lot of the other people on the show," she said. "You're not a performer. You're not an athlete, so all of this — every single aspect of it of this — is new to you."
"I really am impressed," continued Inaba. "There was a sweet vulnerability to what you were doing and an honesty that resonates with people."
Judge Len Goodman said Gosselin needs to get over her "nervousness" and simply "enjoy the experience."
"The first dance is like your first date — you don't know what to expect, you want to impress and you're nervous — and I think that was the stumbling block for you," he said.
Gosselin came in third to last in her debut, receiving 16 out of a possible 30 points.
