HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Kate Gosselin claims she is broke and unable to pay her bills after her estranged husband Jon dipped into their joint bank account.
"He took $230,000 of the $231,000 we had," the 34-year-old Kate told Meredith Vieira on Monday's "Today Show." "I have a stack of bills. The last thing I wanted was to do this show and end up not being able to pay our bills."
While she's been left in a difficult situation financially, Kate said the situation doesn't impact her eight children with Jon.
"Financially, the kids are protected. They have the fund that I set up for them," said Kate, who also confirmed plans for a new show with Food Network host Paula Deen. "That was my long-term goal. It is secure and substantial ... and it is safe. I had the presence of mind to start that on my own. That's what I want for them, [for] their future to be secure."
Kate also spoke out about the ongoing legal battle brought on by Jon to stop filming on her rebranded TLC show "Kate Plus 8." She disputed her soon-to-be ex's comments on "Larry King Live" last week in which he said their children no longer want to be part of the show.
"I told the kids over the weekend that we weren't filming," Kate said. "Times eight, there was wailing and sobbing. They love the crew, they love the interaction, they love the events. It is not harmful to them. They are angry."
