HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — While starring in the "High School Musical" franchise may have put Vanessa Hudgens on the map, the young star is now looking forward to expanding her horizons in the adult world.
"The fact that kids look up to me in my role as Gabriella is flattering," the 20-year-old Hudgens tells People of her "HSM" role. "But at the end of the day, I want to do R-rated films, and I want to do things that are a bit edgier, so maybe some kids can't see some of them."
Hudgens is hard at work on a few new movies with a bit more edge, including the action flick "Sucker Punch," in which she'll be firing machine guns instead of belting out musical numbers.
"I think the best part about being an actor is playing different characters," Hudgens tells the mag. "I'm definitely going to revisit musicals later, once I feel accomplished at a certain point, that I've gone somewhere with my acting career. Then I'll go back, because that's where I grew up – in musicals."
While her acting career is fast changing, Hudgens hasn't completely said goodbye to her "High School" days. She is still very much in love with her boyfriend, fellow "HSM" star Zac Efron, but said marriage is the furthest thing from her mind.
"I think [marriage and starting a family] is great," she said, "but I'm so focused on my career right now that it doesn't really cross my mind."
