SAO PAULO, Brazil — Usher's wife, Tameka Foster-Raymond, suffered a cardiac arrest shortly before undergoing a plastic surgery procedure in Brazil, a hospital spokeswoman confirmed Thursday to The Associated Press.
Foster, 37, checked into Sao Rafael Hospital last Friday for a "simple liposuction," Ellen Dastry, a spokeswoman for plastic surgeon Silvio Sterman, told AP.
Dastry said Foster went into cardiac arrest as she was being anesthetized for the procedure, "but was revived in less than a minute by heart massage."
Foster was then placed into an induced coma before being transferred into an intensive-care unit in order "to avoid unnecessary complications," Dastry said.
The 30-year-old R&B star's wife is currently recovering at the better-equipped Sirio-Libanes Hospital in San Paulo, the spokeswoman said.
Usher canceled a scheduled performance at Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy party last Saturday night so that he could travel to Brazil and be with his wife.
Usher and Foster were married in the fall of 2007. They welcomed their first child, Usher Raymond V, in November 2007, and a second son, Naviyd Ely Raymond, last December.
Foster also has three children from a previous relationship.
