PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Wyclef Jean's political plans seem to have ended almost as quickly as they began.
The 37-year-old singer will not be allowed to run for president of Haiti, an electoral official told Reuters late Thursday, explaining Jean failed to satisfy legal requirements to run in the country's Nov. 28 presidential election.
"He is not on the list as I speak," said the official.
There has been debate over whether Jean met the residency requirements to launch his presidential bid. The former Fugees star left Haiti at age 9 to live in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Earlier this week, Jean told the Associated Press he was in hiding after receiving death threats over his proposed presidential bid, which he announced earlier this month.
Jean recently told Newsweek that he would challenge the council's ruling in court if it went against him.
"I'll never quit," he said. I'll run in another five years."
