MIAMI — Reggae star Buju Banton has been arrested in Florida on drug charges.
The Jamaican singer, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, was detained last week in a sting operation after he allegedly tried to buy at least five kilograms of cocaine in Sarasota, according to the St. Petersberg Times.
According to authorities, Banton met with an undercover agent on Dec. 8, where he was observed inspecting the cocaine and taking part in a negotiation for the drugs. Two days later, his two associates — Ian Thomas and James Jackson Mack — were arrested when they allegedly attempted to buy the cocaine.
Banton faces a charge of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine. He is being charged in Tampa federal court, the paper said.
