HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Reese Witherspoon admits she wasn't always the glamorous star that her fans have come to know over the years.
"I was a very scrawny little kid with gigantic glasses," the 32-year-old actress tells the BBC in an interview to promote her upcoming movie, "Four Christmases." "There are always those pictures that come out that are so mortifying."
Witherspoon says it was easy to relate to her character in the holiday film, in which she stars alongside Vince Vaughn.
"I know what it feels like to be thrown up on or doing all that kind of stuff," she explains. "I thought it would be quite funny because my character's so scared of children."
"I never knew anything about kids until I had my own," adds Witherspoon. "I'd never even held a baby until I had my own baby so I totally understood where she was coming from."
Witherspoon has two children, Ava, 9, and Deacon, 5, with her ex-husband, actor Ryan Phillippe. While the "Walk the Line" star has yet to begin her holiday shopping due to her new film's busy promotional schedule, she admits that she doesn't like to spoil her children too much.
"I'm a little strict about that kind of stuff," she explains of her shopping plans. "I think kids do best when they only have a couple of things that they really enjoy. I try and stay away from the gluttony of things. They don't appreciate it as much. When they only get one or two things they really like it."
Witherspoon says her holidays always involve plenty of time in the kitchen.
"I really enjoy that part of it," she admits.
The Academy Award-winner also says her children have a unique tradition involving her Oscar.
"They put a little hat on him and a little scarf so he doesn't get cold," she says.
