HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Oscar-winning "Pulp Fiction" writer Roger Avary was arrested on Sunday after a fatal car crash northwest of Los Angeles, officials said.
The 42-year-old Avary was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, Capt. Monica McGrath of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department told Reuters.
Avary was later released from jail after posting $50,000 bail.
The accident occurred in the city of Ojai, a town about 80 miles northwest of Los Angeles, around 1 a.m.
Andreas Zedini, who was a passenger in Avary's car, died of injuries at a local hospital. Zedini, 34, a resident of Italy, was apparently visiting the couple.
Avary's wife, Gretchen, 40, was also a passenger in the vehicle. She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after being ejected from the car and her condition was not immediately known.
The Canadian-born Avary won an Academy Award in 1995 along with Quentin Tarantino for writing the classic film "Pulp Fiction." He was also a co-writer of the recent epic film "Beowulf."
He and his wife live in Ojai, which is a popular artists' colony and tourist destination 14 miles north of Ventura.
