LOS ANGELES — Billy Ray Cyrus is coming to the defense of his daughter Miley after she was accused of pushing the limits with a provacative dance at the Teen Choice Awards earlier this month.
"You know what? I just think that Miley loves entertaining people," the 47-year-old country crooner told Access Hollywood at Thursday's Hellman's/Facebook Feeding American Event in New York City. "She loves singing [and] songwriting."
During the controversial performance, the 16-year-old star climbed atop an ice cream cart and shimmied alongside a pole protruding from its top as she sang her new single, "Party in the USA." Following the show, many expressed outrage across blogs and columns, but the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer said he encouraged his daughter to block out the negative feedback.
"I always tell her to love what you're doing and stay focused for the love of the art and not worry so much about opinion," he said.
Last year, the "Hannah Montana" star drew criticism when she posed semi-nude for a photo spread in Vanity Fair. She later apologized for the shoot with notorious photographer Annie Leibovitz.
"I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed," she said at the time. "I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."

"The jeans are my favorite part of the entire line. Because, like, literally this is going to be good for, like, Middle America, and it will be great for kids that really want to be in fashion but that don't have it available," the 16-year-old "Hannah Montana" star reveals in the August issue of Elle magazine.
When it comes to her own denim shopping, Cyrus confesses that she's more than willing to splurge.
"I would pay $500 for the jeans that we make for $20," she tells the mag. "I'm really into high fashion."
Cyrus admits that being a celebrity is a pretty good deal when it comes to getting all decked out.
"The most fun thing about prom is having that one special night when you dress up and you feel like a princess, and honestly, I get to do that one night a lot," she says.
While Cyrus loves to get all glammed up, don't expect to see any physical changes taking place anytime soon. In April, she was the center of a joke made by actor Jamie Foxx, who told a caller on his radio show: "Who is Miley Cyrus? The one with all the gums? She's got to get a gum transplant!" But Cyrus says she's happy with ner natural style.
"I like these crooked. I love my teeth," she says. "My dad won't let me fix my teeth or cut my hair. He loves it. He's like, 'It's you!' "
While being a celebrity has its benefits when it comes to fulfilling her love for fashion, Cyrus says that being a big star does present a few challenges.
"There are so many people that could be using you," she says. "So me and Nick [Jonas] and Demi [Lovato], we don't need anything from each other. We got our own thing going on."
