HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Walmart is pulling a Miley Cyrus jewelry collection from its shelves over fears the items may contain an abundance of cadmium.
The retailer made the announcement on Wednesday after testing done for the Associated Press found high levels of the toxic metal in the jewelry that Cyrus launched with designer Max Azria.
"We are removing all of the jewelry from sale while we investigate its compliance with our children's jewelry standard," Walmart said.
Cadmium in jewelry does not pose a threat if simply worn, however the fear is children could be exposed by biting or sucking on the items.
Long-term exposure to cadmium can lead to bone softening and kidney failure. It is also a known carcinogen, which has been proven to hinder brain development in the very young.
