HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Melanie Griffith is opening up about her latest rehab stint, revealing she became addicted to painkillers after a skiing accident.
"Addiction's a tough enemy to defeat," the 52-year-old actress tells Spain's ¡Hola! magazine. "I think of it as a monster. If I feed it, it will always want more and more, so now I'm letting it starve to death in a corner. But it's always there."
Griffith says she's made great progress since entering rehab last August.
"Now I feel free," she says. "I don't drink. I don't take pills. Nothing. And it's fantastic. It's like getting out of prison."
The Oscar-nominated star's husband, actor Antonio Banderas, is also dismissing rumors that he forced Griffith into rehab as an ultimatum to save their marriage.
"Melanie was the one who decided to get treatment," he tells Britain's Hello! magazine. "I can't give Melanie ultimatums. First, because I'm not like that. And second, because she wouldn't let me. In 15 years we never discussed that (divorce). We've had rough times like anyone has, and we've had fights. We're a normal couple with ups and downs. But we've never gotten to that point. Never. I'm happy with Melanie."
