NEW YORK — Lil Wayne can thank his dentist for an extra few weeks of freedom.
The 27-year-old rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, had his sentencing delayed Tuesday in order to complete a dental surgery procedure before heading to jail, the Associated Press reports.
His sentencing has since been rescheduled for March 2.
In October, Lil Wayne pleaded guilty to felony gun possession in a plea deal expected to land him behind bars for a year. Police stopped the Grammy winner's tour bus in Manhattan after a concert performance on July 22, 2007, resulting in the discovery of a loaded .40 caliber semi-automatic gun. Authorities later used a DNA profiling technique to tie Lil Wayne to the gun found on the bus.
The "Lollipop" singer is also facing felony drug possession and weapons charges stemming from a 2008 arrest in Arizona. That trial is scheduled to begin in March.
On Sunday, Lil Wayne celebrated his hometown team, the New Orleans Saints, winning the Super Bowl. He then bid farewell to his fans in a live streaming video.
"I'm out this b----," he said. "To all my fans, my real fans I really, really truly love you. I love you with all of me for real."
