LOS ANGELES — Kristen Stewart has apologized for comments she made in British Elle in which she compared her paparazzi photos to images of women being raped.
"I really made an enormous mistake – clearly and obviously," the 20-year-old actress told People. "And I'm really sorry about my choice of words."
Stewart's comments were in response to how she's handled fame since the enormous success of the Twilight franchise.
"What you don't see are the cameras shoved in my face and the bizarre intrusive questions being asked, or the people falling over themselves, screaming and taunting to get a reaction," she told the mag for its July issue. "The photos are so... I feel like I'm looking at someone being raped."
Stewart has always taken pride in being open, but this time she admittedly used a bad choice of words.
"I've made stupid remarks before, and I've always reasoned: 'Whatever. They can think what they want,' " explained Stewart, who has donated her time to assist groups fighting violence against women ever since she played a rape victim in the 2004 film Speak. "Violated definitely would have been a better way of expressing the thought."
She added: "People thinking that I'm insensitive about this subject rips my guts out. I made a big mistake."
