NEW YORK — Kelsey Grammer is heading back to the stage.
The 54-year-old actor will make his Broadway musical debut next spring in La Cage aux Folles, organizers announced Monday.
Grammer will play Georges, the emcee and owner of the St. Tropez nightclub where his flamboyant lover, Albin, stars as the drag queen headliner, Zaza. British actor Douglas Hodge will star as Albin, a role that previously earned him an Olivier award in the London production of La Cage.
The revival of the 1983 Jerry Herman-Harvey Fierstein musical will open April 18 at the Longacre Theatre.
"I had a wonderful experience playing Henry Higgins in the New York Philharmonic's My Fair Lady in 2007, which made me long to perform in a musical on Broadway," said Grammer, who also previously appeared in the Broadway productions Macbeth and Othello. "Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein's wonderfully funny and touching show is about being true to yourself and the challenges you face as a parent, as a spouse and as a family. I cannot wait to work with Douglas Hodge and to sing these magnificent songs every night."
Grammer most recently appeared in the short-lived ABC television series Hank. He is best known for his 20-year portrayal of Dr. Frasier Crane on the NBC shows Cheers and Frasier.
