LOS ANGELES — Hip-hop star Kanye West was charged on Wednesday with misdemeanor battery, grand theft and vandalism as the result of September scuffle with the paparazzi at Los Angeles International Airport, The Associated Press reports.
The 31-year-old music star was arrested on Sept. 11 when he and his manager, Don Crowley, allegedly became upset at a photographer and proceeded to smash the snapper's camera. A second altercation then ensued when the pair reportedly became upset with a TMZ staffer who was videotaping the incident.
Marshall Lowe, a spokesperson for LAX, previously told AP that West and Crowley had yet to reach the security screening area when the altercation began around 8 a.m. The singer and his road manager were scheduled to fly to Honolulu, Hawaii when they were detained.
West is facing 2½ years in prison if convicted.
Crawley is also staring at six misdemeanor charges and faces up to five years in jail if convicted.
West had performed just days prior to the alleged incident at MTV's Video Music Awards.
