HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Justin Timberlake will serve as the executive producer of a new reality series entitled "The Phone" on MTV, the network announced Friday.
Each episode of the series will begin with two hidden cell phones ringing at opposite ends of a major city. When the phones are answered, a "mysterious guide" will give the contestants five seconds to decide if they want to play along for a cash prize, MTV said in a statement.
Those choosing to go along will then compete against each other on various missions before time runs out. During the competition, they'll remain in touch with the guide via cell phone as they are followed by a helicopter.
The show, which is based on a Dutch series, is described by MTV as a wild and cinematic ride reminiscent of such films as "The Bourne Identity" and "The Game."
"Genre-busting and reinvention is at the core of what we do, and 'The Phone' does just that," Tony Disanto, MTV executive vice president of programming and series development, said in a statement.
The series is slated to premiere in the fall.
