HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — His estranged wife claims to be broke and unable to pay her bills, but Jon Gosselin insists the media is painting the wrong picture of him.
"I pay $7,500 per month for the kids, utilities, two mortgages and everything else that needs to be paid," the father of eight tells Entertainment Tonight on the heels of Kate's claims that he withdrew $230,000 from a joint bank account, leaving just $1,000 behind.
The 32-year-old Jon has been accused of acting out after TLC decided to limit his camera time and focus on his soon-to-be ex in a rebranded "Kate Plus 8," but he insists his heart is in the right place.
"I'm not the bad guy here. I'm the one trying to protect my children — that's called being a parent," he says. "I'm protecting my children. I need to pull them off television so we could work this out."
Jon also reiterated his desire to patch things up with Kate in an effort to bring his family together again.
"If you fix the relationship, everything else will come," he says. "I know I made mistakes. I'm apologizing for them now on national television."
