HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Johnny Depp was the night's lone multiple winner at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards held Sunday night at the Gibson Amphitheatre, hours after a fire swept through a lot at nearby Universal Studios.
Depp won best comedic performance for his portrayal of pirate Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." He also took home honors for best villain in "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street."
The night's top honor went to Michael Bay and "Transformers," which won for best movie.
Other notable winners included Will Smith, who won the male performance award for "I Am Legend."
"I haven't always made great movies but I've been trying real hard," Smith told the crowd. "I've dedicated my life to creating and trying to do things that are different."
Ellen Page won best female performance for the teen-pregnancy comedy "Juno."
The theme of smoke carried over to the stage when Seth Rogen and James Franco appeared to smoke a joint while announcing the best summer movie ... so far honor.
"Kids, don't really smoke fake weed like this," Rogen told the crowd.
"Thanks for that intoxicating introduction," said actor Robert Downey Jr., a recovering drug addict, when he accepted the award from the duo for "Iron Man."
Sunday's fire at Universal Studios destroyed a set from "Back to the Future," a King Kong exhibit and a New York streetscape often seen in movies and TV shows.
The cause of the fire, which started around 4:30 a.m. and burned for nearly 12 hours, is under investigation. Damage is expected to be in the millions of dollars.
