HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — John Mayer is coming to the defense of ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson.
On Tuesday, the singer wrote a blog on his Web site defending Simpson, who has been blamed for the poor play of her NFL-star boyfriend Tony Romo.
Last Sunday, Romo's Dallas Cowboys lost their NFC Divisional Playoff game at home to the New York Giants. The quarterback had struggled toward the end of the season with Simpson watching from the stands, causing talk of a possible "Jessica Jinx."
Just last week, Romo was widely criticized, most notably by NFL Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw, for vacationing with Simpson in Mexico the weekend before last Sunday's playoff loss.
"I don't really follow sports, but I have played some of my biggest and best concerts in your state, and having witnessed how dynamic the spirit there is, I'm betting emotions are running high right about now," wrote Mayer, who dated Simpson on-and-off for about a year before the couple split last June.
"All witty barbs, blogs, and fashion policing aside, that girl loves Texas more than you know," the 30-year-old continued. "It's one of her most defining traits as a person. So please don't try and take that away from her. (You probably wouldn't be able to, but it's less work for all involved.)"
As for what prompted Mayer, who recently split with "Friday Night Lights" star Minka Kelly to speak out, the Grammy winner said: "I just thought it would mean something coming from the guy who has the absolute least to gain from this.
"And if I'm out of line in having written it, too bad. I can spare a Wednesday's worth of bad press if it means sticking up for a good soul."
