NEW YORK — Fans attending a John Mayer show just might get more than they bargained for. Well, at least until Jennifer Aniston came along.
On hand for an intimate performance at the Z100 Lounge at New York City's Spotlight Live nightclub for radio station Z100, Mayer opened up about his willingness to get up and close and personal with his fans. Taking a question from a concert-goer, Mayer was asked if he had ever "hooked up" with a fan from a show.
"Do you respect me for my honesty? The answer is yes I have," the 30-year-old musician said.
Following plenty of laughter from the crowd, Mayer smiled and added, "But that was before camera phones were around!"
Of course, that was also before he started romancing Aniston, making him an even bigger tabloid target. Mayer said he realizes it's all part of the career that he signed up for.
"TMZ is made of some garbage items," he told the crowd. "I can't be killed by garbage because I'm made of garbage. That's the game and I'm okay with that."
Mayer also spoke about his involvement with the film "The Bucket List," for which he wrote the hit song "Say."
"I loved the process so much that I began writing songs for movies that I wasn't even asked to write songs for," he said. "I wrote a song for 'Wall-E' called "Will Someone In This Piece Say Something!"
As for the aspiring artists hoping to follow in his footsteps, Mayer offered plenty of encouragement, telling the hopefuls, "Just commit yourself. That's the way you make it."
