HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — In case anyone was still wondering just how serious Joaquin Phoenix is about retirement, the 34-year-old actor put the proof on his knuckles.
Phoenix scribbled "Good Bye" on his hands as he appeared on the red carpet Saturday night for the premiere of his latest film, "Two Lovers," which debuted at the American Film Institute festival in Los Angeles.
"I think it's just moving on. It's rediscovering something else," he said of his retirement plans to The Associated Press.
Phoenix first dropped the bombshell last week during an interview with Extra at a San Francisco fundraiser.
"I want to take this opportunity... also to give you the exclusive and just talk a little bit about the fact that this will be my last performance as an actor," he told Extra's Jerry Penacoli. "I'm not doing films anymore."
"Are you serious?" replied a stunned Penacoli.
"Yeah. I'm working on my music," the two-time Oscar nominee insisted. "I'm done. I've been through that."
Phoenix told AP on Saturday that he's looking forward to what lies ahead.
"It's like greener pastures, you know what I mean?" he said. "And so, I'm just going to try and like, I'll just be doing the other thing. ... Hopefully, I will emotionally impact you with that, as well."
