TOKYO — Hayden Panettiere is getting back into the dangerous waters of Japan.
On Friday, the Heroes star is returning Taiji, where she created an international media frenzy in 2007 when she and five other surfers paddled out into the blood-filled waters to protest Japan's notorious dolphin killing cove. The peaceful protest became violent when the fisherman attacked them with spinning propellers and poles, as witnessed in the Oscar-winning documentary, The Cove.
The Save the Whales Again! spokesperson is returning with the intention of opening communication channels between activists and the Japanese people. In particular, she'll be drawing attention to the hunts and raising awareness about dolphin meat being contaminated with mercury and other toxins.
The 20-year-old activist has asked to meet with Taiji's Mayor, City Councilman, and Fisheries Union representatives. Panettiere will also be visiting the Taiji whale museum and captive dolphinarium.
On Saturday, Panettiere will held over to Osaka for a public event taking place at the Tsurumi Ryokuchi Koen Park.
