LOS ANGELES — Elton John is still lending his support to Eminem as the controversial rapper attempts to beat a drug addiction.
"I've been helping Eminem over the last 18 months and he's doing brilliantly," the 62-year-old John shared in an interview with BBC Radio's Danny Baker.
In May, Eminem confessed to The Sun that he reached out to John as he sought to overcome his addiction to several prescription drugs, including the heroin substitute methadone. The unlikely pair first hit it off when they performed together at the 2001 Grammys.
"I talk to Elton a lot," said Eminem. "He had a substance-abuse problem in the past. So when I first wanted to get sober, I called him, because he's somebody in the business... who can relate to the lifestyle and how hectic things can be."
"He understands, like, the pressure and any other reasons that you wanna come up with for doing drugs," he continued. "So I told him, 'Look, I’m going through a problem, and I need your advice.' "
John, who admitted his own drug problems made him "arrogant" and "cocky," said he was happy to lend his support to Eminem knowing full well that the 37-year-old rapper is dedicated to getting well.
"I'm there if people want my help," said John. "If people ask for help you tell them where to go but there's no point advising people if they don't want to do it."
