PHOENIX, Ariz. — Comedian Robert Schimmel was pronounced dead Friday evening from injuries he suffered a week earlier in a car accident. He was 60.
Schimmel passed away in a Phoenix hospital, his spokesman, Howard Bragman, told the Associated Press.
The comic was a passenger in his 19-year-old daughter's car on Aug. 26 when she lost control after swerving to avoid another accident on a Phoenix highway. Schimmel's 11-year-old son was also a passenger in the vehicle but avoided injury.
Bragman said Aliyah Schimmel remains hospitalized, but she is expected to recover.
Schimmel is best known for his HBO specials and his appearances on Howard Stern's radio show. He was also a regular guest on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
The Bronx native faced several health issues during his lifetime. Two years after suffering a heart attack, Schimmel was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2000. He later wrote a book about his treatment called Cancer on $5 a Day.
