HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — With his comeback underway, Chris Brown is sitting down with MTV for an interview to discuss his February arrest for assaulting his former girlfriend, fellow R&B star Rihanna.
"My thoughts [when I look back on it now] is like, 'Why did it happen?' " Brown tells MTV News correspondent Sway during the network special, "Chris Brown: The Interview," airing Friday. "Like, 'What was I thinking? What is wrong with you?' That's what I'm thinking with myself. That's what my thoughts are, basically, now."
When asked what sparked the assault, which took place on the eve of the Grammy Awards, Brown says, "Just anger … Yeah, anger … Young people, we do before we think."
The 20-year-old singer, whose new album, Graffiti drops on Dec. 8, says he is now ready to learn from his mistakes and put the dark chapter behind him.
Say Brown: "It's like, 'How do we get past it? How do you, Chris' — talking to myself — 'how do you go from point A to point B? How do you learn from your mistakes, turn it into a positive and help other people with the situation, and at the end of the day become the person that you want to be?' "
