HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — CBS is saying aloha to a new Hawaii Five-O series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network is developing an updated installment of the famous television series, which starred Jack Lord and aired from 1968-80.
The latest version will be penned by Criminal Minds executive producer Ed Bernero, who said he jumped at the chance to reinvent the franchise.
Bernero, who has the show's iconic theme song as his ringtone, says he doesn't plan to mess with the original formula, which followed the dealings of the fictional Hawaiian state police department.
"We will try to keep as much of the original show as possible," he told the trade publication. "I'm not trying to reinvent it."
The new series, which Bernero referred to as "Hawaii Five-O 2.0," will focus around Chris McGarrett, whose father, Detective Steve McGarrett, headed the police unit in the original series.
Bernero said the famous theme song will also return, as will an updated version of the show's famous phrase "Book 'em, Danno."
This will be the second classic cop series to return to the network, which is already developing an updated Streets of San Francisco.
