HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Cate Blanchett wanted to "quarantine" her family away from her work.
The Robin Hood actress - who has sons Dashiell, 8, Roman, 6, and Ignatius, 2, with theatre director husband Andrew Upton - admits she initially tried to keep her children out of the spotlight, but as they have got older, she likes the boys to take an interest in her work.
She said: "It's a very, very difficult job to do with children, and I think in our first year we were trying to quarantine them from what we do so their lives were hermetically sealed and they didn't feel the impact of our work.
"In the end what we do is actually really interesting for children: it's about dressing up, creating characters, telling stories. It's social and it's often nocturnal and, while they have to go to school, they're old enough now - particularly the two older ones - to bring them into that."
The 41-year-old beauty also revealed she tries to educate her children about making sacrifices and appreciating the things they have.
She explained to Mindfood magazine: "Every single time you go to the supermarket with your children they come up to you and say, 'We need this, we need this.' You say, 'Do you really need that? OK, you can choose three things you absolutely need in this whole supermarket that sells about 7000 products.' "
