PHOENIX, Ariz. — Bret Michaels has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery after suffering a massive brain hemorrhage on April 21, his doctor revealed Tuesday at a press conference.
"He's improving," said Dr. Joseph Zabramski, a top neurosurgeon at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Ariz., where Michaels was treated. "I really expect that he will fortunately make a 100 percent recovery. He's just one of those lucky people – 10 to 20 percent who make a complete recovery and can resume all of their normal activities."
Citing federal privacy laws, Zabramski could not release details of when Michaels, 47, was discharged from the hospital or where he's currently receiving physical therapy treatment. He said one the rocker and Celebrity Apprentice star is currently experiencing severe back spasms.
"We are very concerned that there could be a deterioration in his status at this point," the neurosurgeon told reporters. "We continue to watch him closely."
"He's still very sick right now [but] he's a very determined person," continued Zabramski, who added, "He can walk but he is not walking very well. He is talking. He is mentally aware of what is going on."
The doctor said Michaels, a diabetic, was extremely fortunate to overcome his latest medical scare.
"Mr. Michaels was indeed a lucky person, a very lucky person," he said.
Prior to suffering the brain hemorrhage, Michaels underwent an emergency appendectomy in San Antonio after falling ill just before he was about to take the stage for a concert at SeaWorld.
