NEW YORK — Alexa Ray Joel, the daughter of pop star Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley, has been released from a Manhattan hospital after being rushed there Saturday following an apparent suicide attempt.
"She is going to be fine," Joel told Newsday Sunday of his daughter's condition.
The 23-year-old singer was rushed to St. Vincent's Hospital after her roommate dial 911 around 12:20 p.m. on Saturday, according to the New York Post. Police sources tell the paper that Joel downed eight sleeping pills and that her overdose was classified as a suicide attempt. However, a person close to the ex-couple's daughter said she only consumed a homeopathic antihistamine called Traumeel.
Brinkley arrived at the hospital around 4:20 p.m. and her daughter was released a few hours later, the paper said. The "Piano Man" was reportedly in regular phone contact but did not go the hospital.
Sources tell the Post that Alexa Ray has battled depression since breaking up with her former bandmate, Jimmy Riot, in January 2008. In August, she took to her MySpace page to vent about her love life.
"UGH!!! MEN!!!!," she wrote. "I don't like dating!!! Wish I could be in a relationship again without having to date... I HATE going out!! I'm a homebody and a workaholic... I don't like going out and drinking to meet men!!! I always have to drag myself out the door to get up the motivation to go out, and when I do go out, I don't meet anybody!!!"
"Is anybody else finding it a difficult "dating world" out there?" she continued. "I'm so terrible at dating-- I don't know if I'll ever get used to it! And I HATE the game-playing! Can't stand it.
"I live in the greatest city in the world and I can't seem to meet an interesting guy who also happens to be NICE.Go figure...
"Hope you singletons out there are having better luck than me : (," she ended.
Alexa Ray is the only child of Joel and Brinkley, who divorced in 1994 after nine years of marriage.
