NEW YORK — Comedian Artie Lange returned to the stage over the weekend, his first performance since attempting suicide earlier this year.
The 42-year-old funnyman brought his act to the Comedy Cellar in New York, where fellow comic Craig Gass said he looked "healthy" and much slimmer.
Gass spoke about Lange during his Monday appearance on Howard Stern's radio show. He told the shock jock that Lange opened the show with a classic line, telling the crowd, "I am so glad fashion week is over because I'm f---in' exhausted.''
Lange stabbed himself nine times in the stomach with a 13-inch kitchen knife in a violent suicide attempt on Jan. 2. He was rushed to the hospital after his mother found him lying on the floor of his Hoboken apartment.
After the suicide, Stern was quick to praise Lange's contributions to his radio program over the years.
"We all have our demons," said Stern, referring to Lange's notorious gambling and substance abuse problems. "Artie has given this show tremendous moments of great comedy. He's a tremendous contributor. He is a good man. Don't forget how great he is."
"[He] is the most loving guy, always giving," added co-host Robin Quivers.
