LOS ANGELES — "30 Rock" and "Mad Men" held onto their titles on a night in which the Primetime Emmy Awards were filled with plenty of surprises.
NBC's "30 Rock" was named best comedy for the third time, while AMC's "Mad Men" took home best drama once again after last year's breakthrough win.
In one of the night's biggest surprises, Toni Collette of Showtime's "United States of Tara" was honored as best lead actress in a comedy series for her role as a mother with multiple personalities.
Alec Baldwin of "30 Rock" won best lead actor in a comedy, but was the only star from the show to take home an acting prize.
"I'll be honest with you. I'd trade this to look like him," joked Baldwin as he accepted the award from Rob Lowe.
On the drama side, Glenn Close repeated her win for best dramatic actress for her role as a ruthless lawyer on FX's "Damages."
Bryan Cranston, who plays a chemistry teacher who turns to drug dealing to pay for his medical bills on AMC's "Breaking Bad," was also a repeat winner as best actor in a drama.
The 61st annual event was hosted by "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris, who kicked off the telecast with a comic song and dance routine.
