NEW YORK — The Kennedys, a controversial $30 million miniseries nixed last month by the History Channel, will air after all.
The drama starring Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear has been picked up by ReelzChannel, the cable network announced Tuesday.
"We believe in the business we are committed to – movies and the how and why people love them. If that means defending the right for well told and important stories to be seen – then so be it – we can do that," said ReelzChannel CEO Stan E. Hubbard. "We're not beholden to anyone – we are here for the viewers and we are here for the movie and artistic community as well. We have freedom that few networks enjoy."
According the network's press release, The Kennedys "relives the public and private joys and tragedies of the most influential family in the world, including fraternal rivalries, mob associations, the drugs and the women." It will begin airing the eight-part miniseries on April 3.
Kinnear plays President John F. Kennedy (JFK) and Holmes appears as First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. The film also stars Barry Pepper as Robert F. Kennedy and Tom Wilkinson as Joseph Kennedy Sr.
The History Channel reportedly backed away from airing the miniseries after the Kennedy family voiced concerns.
