HOBOKEN, N.J. — Sal Picinich, a baker who appeared on the hit TLC show Cake Boss, has died. He was 63.
The reality star passed away Sunday from cancer, his wife of 37 years, Lucille, told the New Jersey newspaper The Record.
Picinich was a popular star on the reality series, which follows the adventures of Buddy "The Cake Boss" Valastro and his family and staff. He was the longest tenured employee at the Hoboken, N.J. bakery, having been hired in 1964 by Valastro's late father, Buddy Sr.
Born on the Croatian island of Susak, Picinich stopped appearing on the show when his cancer surfaced in late 2009. However, he returned last summer to accept the Employee of the Century award to mark the bakery's 100th anniversary.
"TLC was saddened to learn of the passing of Sal Picinich, a beloved Carlo's Bakery employee featured on Cake Boss," TLC said in a statement. "We join Buddy Valastro and the entire Carlo's crew in sending Sal's family our sincerest condolences."
The Carlstadt resident is also survived by the couple's two children, Danielle and Salvatore.
