HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Kate Hudson admits she had to perform quite the acting job to initially hide her pregnancy from others.
"I'm pregnant, and I'm really sick," the 31-year-old star explains to London's The Times. "But I couldn't say that because you really want to keep it as quiet as you can for the first trimester."
In fact, that meant hiding the truth from even her closest pals.
"My friends all thought I was depressed because I wouldn't leave the house," Hudson says. "But I didn't want anyone to know for a long time. I was just hoping that all of a sudden, I could show up somewhere with a big belly."
"But, of course, you're somewhere in L.A., and somebody says something, and it ends up somewhere," she adds. "And here we are."
The father of the baby is Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy, her boyfriend of about nine months. Their child is due in the summer, which will allow for plenty more of what Hudson calls her "pregnancy brain" to appear.
"I babble a lot," she says of her current state of mind. "I forget words, and how to put sentences together. I just give up."
This will be the second child for Hudson, who has a 7-year-old son, Ryder, with ex-husband Chris Robinson.
