NEW YORK — Sylvie Cachay, a fashion designer behind the swimwear collection Syla, was found dead Thursday night in an overflowing bathtub at an upscale New York City hotel. She was 33.
Cachay's body was discovered around 3 a.m. in a room at the Soho House, a private members' club and hotel in Manhattan's Meatpacking District, police told the Associated Press.
The designer was submerged in the tub, dressed in a thin black sweater and underwear. Police say she had some small red marks on her neck. Prescription drugs were also found in the hotel room.
Cachay's boyfriend, Nicholas Brooks, is being questioned by police. He was seen leaving the hotel earlier and returning around 3:30 a.m. to find police at the scene. Brooks is the son of Academy Award-winning songwriter Joseph Brooks, who penned the 1977 ballad "You Light Up My Life."
An initial autopsy was unable to determine a cause of death.
Cachay grew up with dual citizenship, splitting her time between Virginia and Peru. She studied at Parsons Paris before earning a BFA in Design from Marymount University in Virginia. She began her fashion career as an intern at Marc Jabobs before landing a job with Tommy Hilfiger. She was later pursued by Victoria's Secret to head up their swimwear team. She left Victoria's Secret in January 2006 to launch Syla.
