HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Brad Womack says he didn't know what to expect when he kicked off his second stint as The Bachelor.
"Words can't describe what I was feeling when I arrived at the mansion the first night," the Texas native, who famously rejected both DeAnna Pappas and Jenni Croft on the show in 2007, writes in his blog for People magazine. "I was so excited, so nervous, so anxious. My biggest fear was how I was going to be received by the women when they found out it was me again? Would they be disappointed? Happy? Would they turn around, get back in the limousine and fly back home?"
Actually, the first woman to greet Womack on last night's premiere episode – Chantal O'Brien – conveniently slapped him for the cameras.
"YES, the slap was VERY real," Womack says. "NO, the producers did not add a sound effect to make it louder. Unfortunately, they didn't have to – Chantal O. has one hell of a right hook. And lastly, no, I did not know it was coming. My thoughts immediately afterward: 'This is going to be a very long night.' Thankfully, Chantal and I did clear the air a little bit later that evening."
So which contestants made impressions beyond just a slap? Womack says he was intrigued by Madison Garton, a Colorado model who wears fangs.
"I'm not sure I understand," he says of her fangs. "Maybe I'm too plain or not edgy enough. However, she seems to be this very vulnerable and interesting woman."
He was also taken by Emily Maynard, a single mother whose ex died in a plane crash. "A stunningly beautiful woman with a Southern accent that's thicker than mine – the first impression was incredible," he says.
The first impression rose went to Ashley Spivey, "the kind of woman who just makes everyone feel good," Womack says.
"She's a truly sweet and caring human being," he writes. "I want Ashley S. to stay around for a very, very long time."
Womack has previously alluded to a "happy ending" this time around. In his blog, he vows that fans won't be disappointed with the final outcome this season.
"I realize that some of you may still be skeptical about my return, and to be honest, I can't blame you," he says. "All I can say is that I am so very grateful for the second chance. I promise I won't let you down."
