Twihards around the world must be very happy this morning.
Some two years after we bid adieu to Bella and company with the final Twilight film, Breaking Dawn Part 2, Lions Gate has announced plans to release five short films, with some help from Facebook.
That’s right, the social media giant will finance the films, which will be directed by five aspiring female directors.
The Storytellers: New Creative Voices of the Twilight Saga (that’s the name of the project) will be comprised of a panel of judges — Kristen Stewart, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Julie Bowen, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, producer Cathy Schulman, Frozen co-director Jennifer Lee and Meyer herself — to determine the winning short films and directors.
“We think Facebook is a great way for us to introduce the world of Twilight to a whole new audience while re-energizing existing fans,” Lions Gate vice chairman Michael Burns told The New York Times.
“This is just the beginning — a template, if you will. You can probably guess what might be coming next.”
Can you imagine, Facebook releasing its own movies?
As the Times points out, the Weinstein Company is doing something similar with Netflix, after announcing plans to release the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel on both Netflix and select Imax theaters.
The Twilight short films will also be supported by Women in Film.
