Born in Los Angeles, Calif., Angelina Jolie is the daughter of actor Jon Voight and late actress Marcheline Bertrand. She is of Czech, French-Canadian, English and Iroquois ancestry.
At the age of 11, Jolie started to train at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, where she appeared in several stage productions. She made her screen debut alongside her father in the 1982 film "Lookin' to Get Out."
Jolie first garnered attention as a high-school computer wiz in the 1995 film "Hackers." Critical acclaim soon followed when she starred in the 1997 made-for-TV movie "George Wallace," which won her a Golden Globe award and an Emmy nomination. The following year, she starred in the HBO production "Gia," in which her portrayal of supermodel Gia Carangi earned the actress a second Emmy nomination.
Four years later, Jolie received her first major break, appearing alongside Denzel Washington in "The Bone Collector." That same year, she starred with Winona Rider in "Girl, Interrupted." Her performance as a troubled mental patient earned her an Oscar for best actress in a supporting role and propelled her into a big-time star.
She later sealed her international fame by playing the video game heroine Lara Croft in "Tomb Raider" (2001) and "Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life" (2003).
Jolie is also well-known for her humanitarian efforts, having been named a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees in 2001.
